Mini Puff Cross Pattern (adapted by Carmen Carpenter )



Mini Puff Cross is a free crochet 3 inch square pattern with devotional
Yarn:  worsted (for sport/baby weight-use an F hook & for the edging put hdc in place of sc around)
Crochet hook: Size 5.0 mm or US G or or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.           
Finished size:  3” x 3”

Special stitch Instructions: Puff Stitch:

YO, insert hook in next stitch, yo, pull through and bring yarn up to height of rest of stitches (3 loops on hook),
YO, insert hook in SAME stitch, yo, pull through and bring yarn up to height of rest of stitches (5 loops on hook),

YO, insert hook into the SAME stitch, yo, pull through and bring yarn up to height of rest of stitches (7 loops on hook),  

YO, insert hook into the SAME stitch, yo, pull through and bring yarn up to height of rest of stitches (9 loops on hook),
 YO & pull through all 9 loops, ch 1 to close.

(Notes: Make sure when you work the next row of solid sc, that you skip this closing ch-1 or you will have extra stitches in the row following the puffs.  I count 4 YOs for this complete puff stitch, you can YO more or less to get desired bump.)



Rnd 1:  Start with EITHER a sc foundation chain of 9, ch 1 & turn (foundation sc combines the chain & 1st row of sc into one step) , OR chain 10, sc in second ch from hook & in each remaining ch, ch 1 & turn. (9 sc)
Rnd 2: Sc in nxt 4 sc, puff stitch (see special stitches above) in nxt sc, sc in nxt 4 sc, ch 1 & turn. (4 sc, 1 puff, 4 sc)

Rnd 3: Sc in each sc across, ch 1 & turn. (9 sc)


Rnd 4: Repeat Rnd 2

Rnd 5: Repeat Rnd 3

Rnd 6: Sc in nxt 2 sc, {puff stitch in nxt sc, sc in nxt sc} 3 times, sc in last sc, ch 1 & turn. (2 sc, 1 puff, 1 sc, 1 puff, 1sc, 1 puff, 2 sc=6sc & 3 puffs)

Rnd 7: Sc in each sc across, ch 1 & turn. (9 sc)


Rnd 8: Sc in nxt 4 sc, puff stitch (see special stitches above) in nxt sc, sc in nxt 4 sc, ch 1. (4 sc, 1 puff, 4 sc)


Rnd 9: Sc in each sc across, ch 1 & turn. (9 sc)


Rnd 10: (Edging) Turn 90 degrees so that you are working along the side of the square, ch 1, work 3 sc around post of sc just made (corner made), {work approx. 7 sc along side, 3 sc in corners} repeat around for bottom, side & top, sl st to beginning sc. Finish off & weave in ends.
